Alvis Club Looks to the Next Generation.

Monday, December 10, 2018

The Alvis Club has joined forces with the Classic Car Loan Project, which has been run for the past 3 years by classic car enthusiast Bob Wilkinson, in an initiative to encourage the next generation of owners. This is a bold step to meet the challenge faced by all clubs and owners.

The project is offering 11 cars to younger drivers, ideally aged 25 or older, to use for up to a year from April 2019. All safeguards are in place, including insurance, for all to gain from the extended experience. Thanks to the generous spirit of member Jack Meredith we have an Alvis in the project carrying our club banner.

Jack explains, “ The TA14 lived in Wales from February 1949 until 1971.In the 1980s it appears to have been based in Middlesex in the ownership of the QA Manager for the Boeing Aircraft. There is considerable documentation on file covering restoration work during the tenure of this and the successive owners. Last year the car was purchased from an Alvis enthusiast who was unable to complete the commissioning work required to make her fully roadworthy. The car was in running condition with very good metal work and a good interior; also supplied but yet to be fitted was new or re-chromed brightwork and a new wiring loom.”

“Final work is in the hands of Peter Milne is an Alvis expert based in Aberdeen. John Rahtz from the Grampian Transport Museum has put us in touch with a college apprenticeship scheme that we hope will be able to complete a respray before the car is handed over to a younger driver in April. I should say that we are all members of the Scottish Section of AOC as well as general classic car adventurers. I had no hesitation in offering the car into this exciting scheme.”

Project Manager Bob Wilkinson says, “ I am delighted that the Alvis Owners Club, with Jack Meredith, has offered this lovely example of post war motoring into the group. The TA14 will attract a wider range of interest. I was approached by David Salter in October who expressed serious interest from the club and he was able to confirm the offer of Jack’s car at the NEC Classic Car Show.”

There are 4 cars already in use in 2018 and they continuing into 2019 in new hands:

  • 1929 Ford Model A Phaeton
  • 1934 Morgan Super Sports (3 Wheeler)
  • 1960 Vauxhall Victor
  • 1983 Austin Maestro

The 1949 Alvis TA14 will join the following group from April 2019 :

  • 1934 Austin 7 Saloon
  • 1936 Austin 7 Ruby.
  • 1951 Morgan Sports (3 Wheeler)
  • 1956 Ford Anglia1968 Morris Minor
  • 1968 Morris Minor
  • 1997 Volvo 740 Estate.

....thus, 11 cars will be in the handed over to young drivers at a special event at the British Motor Museum . Members will be able to follow the Alvis through the year since each driver will send their stories regularly to the club for publication.

Bob Wilkinson, and all involved in the project will be reassured by the sponsorship from Peter James Insurance Company. Cheryl Maybury, director of Peter James Insurance, said: “Though we never had any doubt from the moment we became involved, we are delighted that this fantastic project is really blossoming.”

“We’re sure that the breadth of vehicles on offer this coming year will attract a great deal of applications from those looking to experience for themselves what life is like behind the wheel of a classic.”

We are pleased to be doing our bit for the future.
